What is the Montessori Method?
Montessori education is self-paced, self-led but guided, assessed and enriched by knowledgeable & caring teachers, the leadership of their peers and the prepared environment. The method aims to develop the whole child.
“Let us leave the life free to develop within the limits of the good, and let us observe this inner life developing.”
– Maria Montessori, Dr. Montessori’s Own Handbook
The method follows five core principles at its vest.
Respect is shown by not interrupting the child’s concentration, providing freedom to make choices.
Children learn through their senses by absorbing information from the world around them. Then they make sense of the world in their minds.
The period when children are sensitive to learning certain skills, after which the sensitivity disappears. The timing of this period varies from child to child.
The environment that enables the child to do things themselves, with freedom to explore materials of their choice, but with limits. The teacher should prepare the environment and present materials in an orderly way.
The children are capable of educating themselves and this happens through the teacher acting as a guide, providing the environment, the inspiration and encouragement for the child to auto-educate themselves.
